How to Support a Loved One Struggling with Anxiety

When your friends, family, or loved ones are struggling, you always want to do everything you can to help them and make them feel better. However, when they are struggling with issues such as anxiety, there are times when you do not know what to do to help them. While you may not know exactly what to say or how to say it, know that your support is giving your loved one positive energy, and you are impacting them very positively. In order to help you understand how to support your loved ones struggling with anxiety, the anxiety specialists at Saltman Psychological Services have compiled our tips to assist. However, it's important to note that these tips are not a substitute for professional advice, and we strongly encourage seeking professional help for severe cases of anxiety.

Tools To Help A Loved One With Anxiety

Offer Your Support & Understanding Of What They Are Going Through

By offering your loved one unwavering and consistent emotional support, you are letting them know you are there for them during their time of need. By providing compassion, understanding, and support, you are letting them know there is no risk of abandonment. Try saying “You seem really anxious, is there anything I can do to help?” rather than “Why are you so upset?  Everything is fine!”

Provide Them With Coping Techniques

Another great way to support your loved one with anxiety is by learning anxiety coping techniques and tools and providing them with those tools and resources. Doing so can give your loved one a toolbox of information to lean on when they become anxious, knowing they have techniques that will assist them in reducing anxiety. For instance, deep breathing exercises, progressive muscle relaxation, or mindfulness meditation are effective coping techniques. Another popular practice is grounding exercise, which encourages the individual to focus on their current physical environment, redirecting their focus from anxiety to their surroundings. Some people also really benefit from having the company of someone they care about while trying to use their coping skills, so you might also want to offer to sit with them if that feels right to you.

Offer Other Resources Or Assistance From A Professional

While your support to your loved one is extremely beneficial and unmatched, asking the individual if they want to seek out information regarding professional support and resources can truly help them find the solution to their mental health and anxiety. If the response is positive, lead them to find resources and tools that are accurate to their situation and needs. Doing so can make a significant difference in their journey to managing anxiety.
